Textiles and leather - the basic materials of our clothes

In the textiles and leather industry, one generally differentiates between natural or artificial textile materials (such as silk and cotton or viscose and microfibres) and natural materials such as leather in the manufacturing of clothes. Leather is an especially treated animal skin which can come from animals such as calves, pigs, goats, chamois, kangaroos or reptiles such as snakes and crocodiles. The word textiles comes from Latin. The Latin word ”textere” means weaving or braiding.

From a historical point of view, the natural material leather is as old as mankind. Almost thousands of years ago, materials such as cotton, wool and leather were used to manufacture natural textiles. In Babylon, leather was called white gold. In Mexico, archaeologists even found 7000 years old cotton. The Neanderthals used leather as a protecting material for their housing and clothes. The leather tanning processes were already known almost 6000 years ago in Egypt. Since 2000 BC, tanning with natural materials was practised in Europe – mostly with the bark of oaks and beech trees.

Today textiles and leather items are available in the fashion and furniture market in hundreds of styles, designs and materials – with embroidery, with sequins and even with sparkling decoration stones. Leather can be used universally, has a smooth surface, is durable and robust. Leather is also waterproof and breathable a fact that makes leather fashion a reliable partner when it comes to protecting motorcycle biker wear. But leather is not only used in the textiles industry for the manufacturing of leather clothing such as trousers, vests, suits or shoes, but also in the leather accessories industry for handbags, cases and hats, and in the furniture manufacturing industry such as sofas, couches and chairs. Besides wood, stone, wool and silk, leather is one of the oldest used materials of mankind. However, due to its price and time intensive manufacturing processes leather is often replaced today by artificial fabric or imitations which look and feel like real leather.
Thus, if you are you active in the international leather wholesale, the textile wholesale or if you are the owner of a leather stores chain, this B2B textiles and leather directory offers you a comprehensive overview on worldwide clothing manufacturers, fabrics companies or other wholesalers in the textile industry.
