The success story of jeans
Today almost anyone has a pair of jeans in his or her wardrobe. These pants are usually worn by many people every day – for working and also in their leisure time. What began once with a simple pair of blue jeans or denim jeans, has undergone a tremendous change and had a remarkable impact on international fashion and lifestyle. Jeans are available in all sizes, styles and shapes, for example boot cut jeans or baggy jeans. Almost any size is available for kids’ jeans, men’s jeans or women’s jeans. There is nowadays any jeans size for every fit: Men’s jeans, jeans for tall women, very tight jeans or kids’ jeans. Designer jeans are often decorated with colourful embroidery, with rich printings and with sparkling sequins.
The Bavarian Levi Strauss invented the jeans. He immigrated to San Francisco. Later on, together with the tailor Jacob Davis, he filed a patent for jeans pants in 1873. Originally, the jeans pants should offer American gold-diggers more robust work wear. In their first year, these pants were made of brown canvas. After World War II, the jeans literally conquered the European fashion market, and special jeans shops were founded. In 1948, jeans were for the first time produced in Europe. Finally, in 1953, the first pair of women’s jeans was manufactured. Besides regular jeans, also designer jeans, leather jeans and jeans jackets are very common today.
The classic jeans is made of indigo denim, has five pockets and a quilting seam. It usually has between five and seven belt loops and can be opened and closed by zippers. Denim is a robust, blue fabric made of cotton. Cotton is the most common material when manufacturing jeans. The name denim comes from the French town Nimes. In French, „De Nimes“ means „from Nimes“. Indigo is a dark blue dyestuff, which can today be manufactured chemically. However, the colour indigo was in former times known in Egypt and China – almost 4500 years ago. It was a natural colour which was made of the leaves of the indigo plant.
